Communicable Disease Control - Children
Up until the early to mid-1900s, the leading causes of death were communicable diseases – diseases spread from person-to-person. Public Health had the major responsibility for controlling the spread of communicable diseases. This responsibility continues today. Services are provided to control the spread of communicable diseases such as whooping cough, shigella, and diseases caused by contaminated water or food such as salmonella. Dental Health Services
A dental hygienist coordinates screening, referral and follow-up for students in grades K, 2, 5 and special classes. Educational presentations and workshops are conducted as requested by the community. The Smile Safari Mobile Dental Clinic travels to elementary Pitt County Schools to provide on-site dental care to children who receive Medicaid, Health Choice, or low income children with no dental insurance. Immunizations - Children
Protecting our children from deadly diseases is a top priority for Public Health. The following immunizations are provided free of charge to children - Diphtheria, Pertussis (whooping cough), Tetanus, Polio, Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hib (prevents H. influenza meningitis), Varicella (chicken pox) and Hepatitis B. Lead Screening
Free blood tests are offered for lead poisoning for children from 12 months through age 5. For more information, please call 902-2305. To make an appointment, please call 902-2449. Also see Lead Poisoning.

Sickle Cell Testing and Counseling
Sickle Cell tests are available to anyone who has never been tested. A regional genetics counselor provides counseling to individuals and families with positive sickle cell screening.

Well Child Clinic
Services include physical exams, pre-school physicals, kindergarten physicals, developmental screening, immunizations, vision and hearing screening, and nutrition counseling services. Please call 902-2449 to make an appointment.

WIC - Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, & Children
Provides nutrition education and counseling, supplemental nutritious foods, and breastfeeding education and support for qualified children from birth to age 5. Additional Services

Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Program
Provides growth and development as well as family life education to students and teachers in Pitt County Schools. Programs are also offered to community youth organizations. For more information, please call 902-2423.

Child Care Health Consultation
Works to improve the health, safety and nutrition practices in child care centers and homes through education, consultation, and shared problem solving with child care staff. This program is funded through the Martin Pitt Partnership for Children, which is our local Smart Start agency. For more information, please call 902-2305.

Child Fatality Prevention Team (CFPT)
A state-mandated team of appointed members representing agencies such as Department of Social Services, Police Department, District Attorney’s Office, Guardian Ad Litem program, School System, Medical Examiner’s Office, Fire Department and other child advocacy organizations. In reviewing child fatalities, the team 1.) identifies potential causes of child fatalities, 2.) identifies ways to improve the delivery of services to children and families, and 3.) makes recommendations for changes that could prevent future fatalities. Child Service Coordination
Infants and children up to age 5 years who have been identified with developmental and/or chronic health problems or who are at risk for such problems are offered Child Service Coordination. The family is assigned a nurse or social worker to ensure that the child receives appropriate health and education services and are referred to other supportive resources. Health Education
A variety of health education programs are available to schools, churches and community groups. Smoking cessation is also offered on an individual basis through the health education program. For more information, please call 902-2426.

Lead Poisoning
The Health Department investigates places where children live, go to school or spend significant amounts of time. Environmental Health Specialists work with families and/or businesses, such as childcare facilities, to reduce the risk of exposure to hazards. Newborn Assessments
Home visits by a registered nurse are made after hospital discharge to new mothers and babies who are on Medicaid and/or received prenatal or care coordination services from the Health Department. These services may be provided to others upon request of the client or the physician. For more information, please call 902-2305.

Parenting Classes
It has often been said that parenting is one of the most difficult jobs you can have with little or no special training offered. We provide education to expectant parents or parents of newborn babies. Classes cover information on care of the newborn, feeding, safety and development through the first year of life. Participants must receive Medicaid or be enrolled in Maternity or Child Service Coordination. For more information or to enroll in classes, please call 902-2424.

PIMPAC (Pitt Infant Mortality Prevention Advisory Council)
A team of health professionals, concerned parents and community members work together to prevent babies from dying before their first birthday. The hard work, dedication, and combined efforts of these people resulted in the 2004 infant mortality rate being the lowest ever reported in Pitt County. Start With Your Heart
In an effort to promote cardiovascular health, this regional program supports efforts that encourage communities to recognize health conditions - high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, overweight, and diabetes - as CVD risk factors, provide access to regular preventive health care services, and increase awareness of the importance of disease management, including patient self-management. This also involves increasing public awareness of the warning signs of heart attack and stroke, and the appropriate action in the presence of those signs. It also involves ensuring that systems are in place to assure access to appropriate and timely care, starting with activation of the 911 system, emergency transport, quality acute care, prevention of recurrent events and access to rehabilitation services.
