2010 Pitt County Multi-jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan

Update:

The Pitt County Planning Department received notice that the 2010 Pitt County Multi-jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan was approved by FEMA on Friday, June 11, 2010. The FEMA approved plan will be forwarded to the Pitt County Board of County Commissioners for adoption later this summer. Advertised public hearings will precede adoption by Pitt County. Watch for advertisements on the County Page in the Daily Reflector newspaper on Saturdays. In addition, public hearings will be advertised on Pitt County Planning's website as soon as they are scheduled.

DRAFT:

In December 2000, the County Board of Commissioners adopted the first Pitt County Hazard Mitigation Plan - one of the first plans to be completed within the State of North Carolina. The County received two awards related to the implementation of the plan- the North Carolina Division of Emergency Management's Community of the Year Award for Outstanding Achievement in Hazard Mitigation; and the North Carolina Chapter of the American Planning Association's Outstanding Planning Award for Plan Implementation in a Small Community (for originality, transferability, and quality of the Plan).

Pitt County was awarded a $50,000 Pre-Disaster Mitigation Grant from FEMA to complete a required update to our Multi-jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan. As part of this update, the Towns of Ayden, Falkland, Fountain, Grifton and Simpson are joining Pitt County, Bethel, Farmville and Winterville as plan participants. Staff, along with assistance from The Wooten Company, began working on the update in March. The updated plan was submitted to North Carolina Emergency Management (NCEM) for review in November. Once the plan has been approved by NCEM it will be forwarded along to FEMA for final approval. The updated plan must be approved by FEMA by March 15, 2010. Those communities that do not have an approved plan will not be eligible for future public assistance and hazard mitigation funding.
