Pitt County Government

doc cover In December 2000, the County Board of Commissioners adopted the first Pitt County Hazard Mitigation Plan - one of the first plans to be completed within the State of North Carolina. The County received two awards related to the implementation of the plan- the North Carolina Division of Emergency Management's Community of the Year Award for Outstanding Achievement in Hazard Mitigation; and the North Carolina Chapter of the American Planning Association's Outstanding Planning Award for Plan Implementation in a Small Community (for originality, transferability, and quality of the Plan).

Among Plan implementation achievements, the County has updated the Flood Damage Prevention Ordinance, adopted countywide zoning, completed the Hazard Mitigation Grant (Buyout) Program, and developed and implemented a coordinated permitting system.

In December 2003, Pitt County was awarded a planning grant to update the 2000 Plan. The County extended an invitation to municipalities within the County to participate in the update and to expand the scope of the plan to a Multi-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan. The towns of Bethel, Farmville, Grimesland, and Winterville chose to participate in the planning process. The result was a more comprehensive countywide approach to hazard mitigation planning.
