In response to the challenge issued by the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness, the Pitt County Board of Commissioners and the City of Greenville adopted resolutions to develop a 10-Year Plan to End Chronic Homelessness.  In January 2008, a 50+ member Blue Ribbon Task Force (BRTF) convened to develop this plan. Members of the BRTF have been chosen from a wide spectrum of the population and appointed to participate in a ten-month process that includes a series of committee meetings, focus groups, public forums and the writing of an action plan to end chronic homelessness in Pitt County.

Our community’s nonprofit and public agencies are providing valuable services to the homeless population and are achieving measurable results.  Their work is improving the lives of countless individuals and families.  Even though the current programs are successful, the rate of homelessness is not declining in the Pitt County.

The 10-Year Plan to End Chronic Homelessness will move the Pitt County community from managing homelessness to preventing and eliminating homelessness.  It is time for our community to move from multiple efforts to working through an integrated community collaboration that focuses and maximizes the community’s resources toward clearly defined strategies.  Nonprofits, public agencies, businesses, educational institutions, lawmakers, private foundations, civic and professional organizations and the faith-based institutions must work together in a coordinated manner to implement these strategies.
