The Tax Assessor and Tax Collector departments have been combined to form Tax Administration.

Tax Assessor: Each year in late December, abstract listings are sent to all taxpayers that had a listing for the prior year. All personal property subject to annual listing must be listed during the month of January in order to avoid a 10% late listing penalty as mandated by State law. Because Pitt County utilizes a permanent listing system for real estate, real property does not have to be listed unless a change in value has occurred. Persons listing real or personal property for the first time should contact the Tax Assessor's Office for listing information. In addition to listing services, the Assessor's office provides property maps of Pitt County.

The Tax Assessor’s primary responsibility is to appraise, list and assess all taxable real and personal property each year and furnish tax base figures to the County, Municipalities and Fire Departments for budget purposes.

Tax Collector: Real estate and personal property listed for taxation during January are billed, prior to August 1 and may be paid on or before August 31 to receive a 2% discount. Taxes must be paid on or before January 5th to avoid interest.

Registered motor vehicles are now taxed at the time tags are renewed and are paid to the NCDMV. Tax amounts are listed on the "Invitation to Renew" provided by NCDMV. Taxpayers should check their tax districts before renewing their tags. If the tax districts listed are incorrect, please notify the Tax Office to get them corrected before renewal.

See the Tax Collector page for more answers to your questions about paying taxes.
