August 21, 2009 Pitt County Commissioners Meet With Citizens North of the River
Chairman McLawhorn and Commissioner James were accompanied by Pitt County Manager Scott Elliott, as well as personnel from the Emergency Management, Planning and Development, Social Services, and Pitt Area Transit Departments; the Pitt County Sheriff’s Office and Pitt County Schools and Recreation. The forum was held to allow the citizens who live north of the Tar River an opportunity to meet with County officials to discuss government services offered in the area and address other potential concerns or issues. One issue that was discussed centered around a five mile stretch of unlit roadway on Old River Road that lies south of Bethel between the east side of NC Highway 222 and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Highway, stretching from north Greenville. Pitt County is working with citizens to find a way to place and light approximately 60 street lamps along the five mile stretch of road to increase the visibility and safety in that area. Other concerns were about obtaining additional commercial business in the area; government services such as public libraries, parks, and transportation; and street, roadside, and sewer maintenance. Approximately two dozen citizens were present at the forum, which lasted a little over two hours. The Pitt County Board of Commissioners, the County Manager’s Office, and other departments will continue to work to increase government services in the area north of the Tar River, as well as work to address the concerns that were expressed.
