Greenville Urban Area Metropolitan Planning

Area

The Greenville Urban Area includes Greenville, Winterville, Ayden, Simpson and surrounding portions of Pitt County. This boundary is created by using population density provided by the U.S. Census Bureau. In 2010, the population in this area was 142,747.

Plan Development

The Thoroughfare Plan Update is developed by the local governments, the Metropolitan Planning Organization, and the North Carolina Department of Transportation and combines local thoroughfare plans (Greenville, Winterville, Ayden, Simpson and Pitt County) into one urban area plan. It looks at current and future thoroughfare needs for automobile, truck, bicycle, pedestrian and public transportation.

Types of Thoroughfares

Thoroughfares in this plan are identified by three types: major, minor and freeways.
  • Major thoroughfares carry traffic through an urban area.
  • Minor thoroughfares carry traffic from neighborhoods to the major thoroughfares.
  • Freeways are considered highways with controlled access points at interchanges.
