National EMS Week

Emergency Medical Services Week, or EMS Week, was first authorized by President Gerald Ford in 1974. Access to quality emergency care dramatically improves the survival and recovery rate of those who experience sudden illness or injury. EMS Week celebrates EMS practitioners and the important work they do in our community. EMS Week brings together local communities and medical personnel to honor the dedication of those who provide the day-to-day lifesaving services of medicine's "front line."  The May 2023 national theme is EMS: Where Emergency Care Begins.

EMS Week occurs every year during the month of May (May 21-27, 2023), and is recognized by Pitt County Emergency Management (PCEM) through a full week of activities designed to educate the public on the subjects EMS personnel, the EMS system, and the often unrecognized elements of emergency medicine.  These efforts usually include:

  • A Proclamation from the Pitt County Board of Commissioners
  • Featured graphics on the Pitt County Website
  • Special posts on the County and PCEM Social Media pages
  • Special programming on PittTV (Optimum - channel 13)
