National EMS Week
May 19-25, 2019 is the 45th Annual EMS Week
First authorized by President Gerald Ford in 1974, EMS Week celebrates EMS practitioners and the important work they do in our community. EMS Week brings together local communities and medical personnel to honor the dedication of those who provide the day-to-day lifesaving services of medicine's "front line."
This year, five of the days within EMS Week have a theme that represent the diverse nature of this profession:
- Monday - EMS Education Day
- Tuesday - Safety Tuesday
- Wednesday - EMS for Children Day
- Thursday - Stop the Bleed Day
- Friday - EMS Recognition Day
How Pitt County Celebrates EMS Week
During EMS Week 2018, Pitt County became the first local government in the state of North Carolina to launch the PulsePoint App. PulsePoint is a free app that alerts users through their phones to nearby cardiac emergencies, allowing them to begin “Hands Only” CPR during the critical minutes between when a 911 call is made and EMS teams arrive on scene. Pitt County Emergency Management (PCEM) worked for nearly a year to establish and impliment the app before launching in May of 2018. During EMS Week 2019, Pitt County Emergency Management is proud to celebrate the one year anniversary of our community coming together and embracing the lifesaving concepts found in this unique app. Hundreds of lives have been affected by this app, with many lives saved as a result. To learn more about the PulsePoint App, visit their website at www.PulsePoint.org.
In addition to the one year anniversary of the PulsePoint launch, Pitt County will also further recognize EMS Week with the following efforts:
Banners: 6’ wide vinyl banners promoting National EMS Week will be displayed at the entrances to the County Administrative Offices at 1717 West 5th Street, and the County Office Complex located at Government Circle, both in Greenville.
Website/Social Media: The home page of the Pitt County Website, along with the Pitt County Facebook page, and the PCEM Facebook page, will all feature special graphics honoring National EMS Week. Daily updates will also be posted on the PCEM Facebook page, featuring information regarding Emergency Medical Services.
“Hands Only” CPR PSA: The Pitt County Public Information Office has produced a 4 minute video PSA featuring instructions in “Hands Only” CPR technique, along with basic automated external defibrillator (AED) use and promotion of the PulsePoint app. This PSA will be run on PittTv (Suddenlink Cable Channel 13), and posted to the PittTV YouTube Page as well as County social media outlets.
