Pitt County calls for public input for North of the River Community Center

Residents invited to provide input on programs, facilities

PITT COUNTY, N.C. – Pitt County Government is seeking public input for the development of a recreation site plan for the North of the River (NOR) Community Center/Gymnasium and associated outdoor recreation facilities.

On Monday, November 21, 2022 the Pitt County Board of Commissioners approved the allocation of $10 million ($5 million each) in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds for twin community recreation centers at the Pitt County Office Park (NOR) and Alice F. Keene District Park locations.

The Pitt County Planning Department and Community Schools and Recreation, with assistance from Rivers & Associates, Inc., are developing the recreation site plan.

“We are excited that ARPA funding has been designated for improved recreational opportunities in the northern part of the county,” says James Rhodes, Assistant County Manager/Planning Director.

Public input sessions will be held to determine which programs and facilities are most important to residents living in or those who frequent the area north of the Tar River (District 2).

Sessions will be conducted in an open-house format whereby residents can arrive at any time to provide input and speak personally with Pitt County representatives. A brief presentation will be made at 5:30 p.m. during each session.

“Staff encourages citizens who live, work and/or travel in northern Pitt County to provide their ideas about programs and activities to be made available at the Community Center and surrounding area,” says Alice Keene, Recreation Projects Coordinator, Planning Department.
