PITT COUNTY, N.C. – March is National Social Work Month and an opportunity to spotlight the profession and highlight the important contributions made in Pitt County.
Pitt County Department of Social Services (DSS) currently employs 97 social workers and 22 supervisors, which is a significant percentage of the social workers in organizations throughout the County including Pitt County Public Health, Pitt County Schools, Veterans Administration, ECU Health and private agencies.
“I’d like to take a moment to recognize the ongoing work and dedication of our DSS staff who serve the residents of our community and uphold the County’s Mission to enhance the health, safety, and well-being of our community by advocating for and providing quality services in a friendly and cost-effective manner,” says Janis Gallagher, County Manager.
Agency accomplishments from the last 12 months include:
• Adoption of 12 children
• Child protection interventions involving 1,104 families
• Guardianship service for 200 adults
• Protection intervention to more than 350 vulnerable disabled adults
• Over 1300 child care subsidy cases
• Utility assistance to 3600 households
• Transition of 24 individuals towards sustained employment through Employment and Training program
“To raise awareness for National Social Worker Day [March 21] and our staff’s tireless dedication and compassion for the individuals and families we serve, the agency is holding a balloon release event on March 20, 2023,” says Sharon Rochelle, Director Pitt County Social Services.
