Pitt County Fire Association Names “Firefighter of the Year”

At their annual “Ladies Night” Dinner and Awards Ceremony, held on January 19, the Pitt County Fire Association presented Charles Suggs of the Grifton Fire Department with the Pitt County Firefighter of the Year award. The Pitt County Firefighter of the Year Award is presently annually to an individual who has demonstrated outstanding support and leadership to their department and the community; contributing to the overall good and advancement of the Pitt County Fire Service for the previous 12 months. The selection committee is made up of Non-Pitt County fire service individuals. Pitt County Emergency Management joins the Pitt County Fire Association in congratulating Mr. Charles Suggs on this award, and further thanking all of the dedicated individuals who serve the residents of Pitt County every day.

The Grifton Fire Department responded to 69 calls for service in 2016, with Charles Suggs responding to 61% of those departmental calls. Mr. Suggs also attended 100% of the County Fire Association Meetings in 2016, and obtained 168 hours of fire service related training. He has served in various leadership roles within the department, including holding the positions of 1st Captain and 2nd Assistant Chief, and now currently serves as Deputy Chief.

In his letter nominating Mr. Suggs for the award, Grifton Fire Department Chief Justin Johnson spoke highly of Mr. Suggs’ devotion to his department and community: “He sacrificed much time from his family in order to make sure the Fire Department was prepared for whatever hardship that it may face. This individual put himself in harm’s way on multiple occasions in order to make sure others were safe.”

The Pitt County Fire Association consists of all fire departments within Pitt County, for the purpose of maintaining an open dialogue between each other and County administration.
