[ARCHIVED] Pitt County Congratulates Seniors on National Placements

23 local participants competed in 2017 National Games in Birmingham, AL from June 2, 2017 - June 15, 2017. 2017 marked the 30-year anniversary for the Games, which are held biennially in different sites across the United States. Over 10,000 athletes participated in this year’s Games, in which the Greenville-Pitt County Senior Games Delegation was represented by nearly two dozen individual and team competitors. These athletes previously competed in badminton, track, archery, bowling and swimming; securing wins at the North Carolina Senior Games held earlier this year. State level wins qualified them for the National Games, where the following notable placements for teams and individuals were achieved:

BPD (Basketball Player Development) 

4th place, Division II • Team members: Tony Boston, Ervin Mackey, Sam Nelson, Jac Robidoux, Sam Smith, Bobby Thompson, Barry Warren, Thomas Wright

 

Joining the Steel Cans (3 – on – 3 Basketball Team – age 50+)

9th place, Division I • Team members: Rita Roy, Cheryl Curtis

 

Shirley Gibson (60-64) : 7th place, 400M Dash • 10th place, Long Jump & Shot Put

 

Leonor Rossel (55-59): 8th place, 100 yd. Freestyle  Swimming • 7th place, 200 yd. Freestyle  Swimming, 11th place, 500 yd. Freestyle Swimming

 

John Banicky (55-59) 4th place, Bowling Singles • 3rd place, Bowling Mixed Doubles

 

Milt Sherman (65-59): 6th place, Badminton • 2nd place, Badminton Mixed Doubles

 

Bob Warren (70-74): 11th place, Tennis Singles

The North Carolina Senior Games is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing year-round health promotion and education for adults 50 years of age and better, and is sponsored statewide by the North Carolina Division of Aging and Adult Services. Greenville-Pitt County Senior Games provides Local Games for five counties and is coordinated by Pitt County Community Schools and Recreation and the Greenville Recreation and Parks Department.
