Environmental Health Director Named Supervisor of the Year

At their annual Spring Educational Meeting, held on April 24-26, 2019

In Aberdeen, North Carolina, the North Carolina Environmental Health Supervisors Association named Pitt County’s Mark Phelps as Environmental Health Supervisor of the Year. Nominated for the award by his staff, Phelps is the current Pitt County Environmental Health Director, a position he has held since September of 2014. Prior to being named Director, Phelps most recently served as an Onsite Wastewater Supervisor in the Environmental Health Division of the Pitt County Public Health Department, where he has was hired in in October of 1994. 

Pitt County Environmental Health is a division of the Pitt County Public Health Department, and is responsible for the monitoring and regulation of several public and private services offered to the public. Responsibilities include including food, lodging & institutional sanitation inspection, mosquito management & control, on-site sewage disposal regulation, and the regulation of public swimming pools & spas, among several others. 

First formed in 1993, the North Carolina Environmental Health Supervisor’s Association is a professional networking and resource organization for those employed in the environmental health field. Membership consists of environmental health directors, supervisors, coordinators, program specialists, or other designated heads of environmental health programs for county or district health departments. The association provides the opportunity for the discussion and creation of solutions to state and local issues of mutual interest among its members.
