Due to the recent weather patterns affecting the region, Pitt County Emergency Management in conjunction with the North Carolina Forest Service, has issued a County-wide burning ban, effective as of Thursday, May 30, 2019 at 5:00 pm. The burning ban prohibits the creation of any outdoor open burning for activities such as bonfires, yard vegetation, and land clearing.
Pitt County has been experiencing above normal temperatures and below normal precipitation. The current weather patterns have resulted in extremely dry conditions due to prolonged drying of outdoor vegetation, which increases the risk of easier fire ignition of material such as leaves, grass, trees, and plants.
Individuals that violate the burning ban will be required to extinguish the fire and could be subject to legal action. The burning ban will remain in effect until such time that weather conditions reduce the increased threat of fire.
Updates on the status of the burning ban will be made available on the Pitt County website at www.PittCountyNC.gov/NEWS and on the Pitt County Emergency Management Facebook page at www.Facebook.com/PittCountyEM.
