On Monday, July 8, 2019 during the regular meeting of the Pitt County Board of Commissioners, County Manager Scott Elliott informed the Board that Randy Gentry had been hired as the new Director of Pitt County Emergency Management (PCEM).  Gentry will officially assume the role of Director on Sunday, July 14, taking over from Interim Director James McArthur, who had been serving in that capacity since the retirement of former Director Allen Everette in late February of this year. His first day in office is scheduled for Monday, July 15, 2019.

Prior to being named PCEM Director, Gentry had been serving as Chief Deputy within the Pitt County Sheriff’s Office, a role he has held through two different sheriff’s administrations since 2010. With well over two decades of law enforcement experience, encompassing response coordination for multiple natural and man-made emergencies, Randy Gentry brings unique perspectives and qualifications for the demanding “always on” role of emergency management.

During his introduction to the Commissioners as PCEM Director, Gentry thanked the Board and Manager for the decision, adding “I look forward to the opportunity of serving Pitt County in this role; to continuing the good work that has been going on in Emergency Management, and working with all of the community partners.”

Pitt County Emergency Management oversees the planning and response to natural disasters or other emergencies throughout the County; and serves as the primary coordinating agency during and after that response. PCEM works in coordination with all municipalities, elected officials, nonprofit organizations, and government agencies at the local, state, and national levels. The department consists of four divisions, including 911 Communications, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Fire Marshal, and Local Emergency Planning Services.
