Pitt County Celebrates 6 Months of ‘Freecycle Fridays’

On Friday, October 11, 2019 Pitt County Solid Waste & Recycling marks the 6-month anniversary of the Freecycle Fridays program, with the 26th weekly posting of items recovered from the Pitt County Transfer Station; made free to the public for re-use and upcycling purposes.

Freecycle Fridays is a unique program, that takes items originally discarded at the Pitt County Transfer Station (formerly the Pitt County Landfill) and posts them to the Freecycle Fridays photo album on the County Facebook page every Friday at Noon. Once posted, the items can be claimed by members of the public and picked up for free. The items can then be repurposed, refurbished, or in some cases even used as-is. This has the double benefit of finding new life for items not yet ready to be discarded, and reducing the overall amount of waste Pitt County transfers to landfills annually.

Since the start of the program in April of this year, there have been 26 of the weekly postings (missing only once for the week of Hurricane Dorian), which combined for a total reduction of nearly 2 tons of material originally destined for a landfill. This program is the first of its kind in the state of North Carolina, and was initially launched as a pilot program by Pitt County to explore the public interest in “upcycling” various discarded household items. Significant interest has been shown in the program, with the main Pitt County Facebook page increasing by nearly 200 followers in the immediate weeks after its launch.

Pitt County Recycling Coordinator, Paula Clark notes the unexpected success of the program, saying “people are realizing the value of these items, which are often still useable, but simply unwanted by their current owners.” Clark also hopes the success of this program will encourage others to enact their own “freecycling” efforts, adding “Before throwing an item away, try giving it away first, you’ll help someone else, help the environment, and feel good yourself.”

Tools, toys, tables, artwork, hardwood furniture, and even medical aids (walkers, canes, wheelchairs, etc) are all just some of the varied items added each week in the Freecycle Fridays album.
