At their annual “Ladies Night” Dinner and Awards Ceremony, held on January 16, 2020, the Pitt County Fire Association presented Larry Richmond of Eastern Pines Fire & Rescue with the Firefighter of the Year award for 2019. The Award is presented annually to an individual who has demonstrated outstanding support and leadership to their department and the community; contributing to the overall good and advancement of the Pitt County Fire Service for the previous 12 months. The selection committee is made up of individuals not currently in the Pitt County fire service. Pitt County Emergency Management joins the Pitt County Fire Association in congratulating Mr. Richmond on this award, and further thanking all of the dedicated individuals who serve the residents of Pitt County every day.
In his letter nominating Mr. Richmond for the award, Eastern Pines Fire & Rescue President, Bob Milam gave particular mention that Richmond’s “passion within the fire service is safe driving and driver training.” Milam went on to note how Larry’s 44 year career as a professional long and short haul truck driver, has aided him in developing the driver education and training programs currently used by the department.
Throughout his service in 2019 with Eastern Pines Fire & Rescue, Richmond has responded to 262 incidents, with a 100% attendance for all departmental meetings. Additionally, he has obtained over 120 hours of training. Since joining Eastern Pines Fire & Rescue in 2003, Larry Richmond has served in various levels of distinction and leadership, serving as a Board Trustee and member on multiple apparatus committees, as well as currently holding a line officer position of Captain.
