PITT COUNTY, N.C. – Pitt County Planning, Community Schools and Recreation, Public Health, and Management Information System departments collaborated with local partners and the Pitt County Schools Early College High School (PCSECHS) to develop an intuitive Parks and Facility App featuring maps and amenities available to County residents.
A launch event is scheduled for Friday, May 13, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at the Alice Keene District Park Pavilion located at 4561 County Home Road, Greenville, N.C.
The concept for the App began in 2018 during a Healthy Communities initiative where barriers of printed maps (trail updates and print costs) were highlighted.
“The Parks and Facilities of Pitt County App was made possible by a collaboration between the Walkability Collaborative and Pitt County Schools Early College program. The Walkability Collaborative is led by the Pitt County Health Department and includes partners from Pitt County Planning Department, Pitt County Community Schools and Recreation, City of Greenville Planning Department, Greenville City Council, NC Department of Transportation and Uptown Greenville. Funding was provided by the Pitt County Health Department with funds from the Healthy Communities Program,” says Allison Swart, Health Promotion Coordinator, Pitt County Health Department.
“We’re excited to host the Parks and Facilities App launch event and showcase the hard work of Girls Who Code, the afterschool club who developed this amazing technology,” says Alice Keene, Recreation Projects Coordinator, Planning Department.
The PCSECHS Girls Who Code is a free afterschool program that teaches girls in 9th – 13th grade about Computer Science and how to use their skills to positively impact our community. The Club’s mission is “to close the gender gap in technology.”
"We are thankful to Pitt County Community Schools and Recreation and the Pitt County Health Department for enlisting Mrs. Currie and this amazing group of students in producing an App that provides a valuable resource to the residents of Pitt County. We are so proud of our students and the difference they are making in our community," says Wynn Whittington, Principal, PCS Early College.

The Parks and Facilities App features a list of recreation facilities, map of parks and facilities, amenity search, Parks and Recreation Department contacts and is available for free download on the APP Store and Google Play.
“This is another example of the great work that can be accomplished through collaboration. This App will assist our residents and visitors in learning about and finding some of the wonderful recreational opportunities available in Pitt County,” says Janis Gallagher, Pitt County Manager. Gallagher continues, “we’re proud of this technology that embodies our mission to enhance the health, safety, and well-being of our community by advocating for and providing quality services in a friendly and cost-effective manner.”
