Currently due to construction, the Pitt County Animal Shelter is open BY APPOINTMENT ONLY 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm Monday thru Friday.
For appointment requests and other Animal Services assistance, you can call 252-902-1726 from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Friday. The shelter is closed on weekends.
The adoption fees are $125 for dogs and puppies, and $85 for cats and kittens. This fee helps to pay for the adopted animal to be spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped before going to their new home. Fees for specific animals may vary due to special circumstances, and fees may change in the future. To inquire about the fees for a specific animals, call the shelter at 252-902-1725.
North Carolina law requires stray and found animals be held for a minimum of 72 hours. Animals surrendered to the shelter by an owner have no minimum hold time.
As of June 2021, construction has resumed on the animal shelter and space is extremely limited. The shelter will not be accepting owner surrender pets until the project is complete (expected Winter of 2021). Please call 252-902-1725 if you have any questions.
As of June 2021, construction has resumed on shelter renovations and at this time we have suspended regular volunteer programs (including Doggy Day Out), and are not accepting new volunteers. We apologize for any inconvenience. Construction is scheduled to be completed in Winter of 2021 and we look forward to resuming volunteer programs when we are able to do so. Donations of supplies or monetary donations (by cash, check, or debit/credit card) can be made at the shelter front office 9:00 am to 11:00 am and 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm Monday through Friday. Appointments are not necessary for in-person donations, but we do ask that you wear a face covering or face mask and call the office at 252-902-1725 when you arrive. For more information about donations or the supplies the shelter is currently in need of, CLICK HERE.
The shelter does not offer rabies, vaccination, or microchipping services to animals other than those in the facility. You must contact a veterinarian for these services for your pets.
Animal Services does hold an annual Rabies Clinic where members of the public are able to bring pets to receive their rabies shot. When the date and time is determined for the Rabies Clinic it will be announced and posted on the CALENDAR.
