Food & Nutrition Services Update

  1. Thank you for contacting Food & Nutrition Services ("FNS" or "food stamps") at the Pitt County Department of Social Services. We want to help you get all the benefits to which you are entitled.

Please type in a little information to let us know who you are. Then you will be asked some questions to help keep your FNS records up to date.

  2. Please type the FIRST 3 LETTERS of your FIRST NAME.

  3. Please let us know how we can help you today.*

  4. What is recertification, and why (and when) do I need it?*

For most people, the law requires that participation in the Food and Nutrition Services program ("FNS" or "food stamps") be recertified every 6 months. Each of these 6-month periods is called a benefit period. If you don't complete your recertification before the end of your 6-month benefit period, your food stamp benefits can simply stop.

To be recertified, you must complete and return a form. You may also need to provide some other documents if your household size, income, or address has changed since your last recertification.

Finally, you must participate in either a phone interview or an in-person interview once every 12 months. So if you were not required to participate in an interview for your last recertification, an interview probably will be required for your next one. Most interviews require 30-60 minutes.

How do you know if the recertification deadline is approaching, and how can you help make sure that you continue to get your benefits?

    Follow these steps:

    1. About the middle of the month before your recertification is due, you should receive a 4-page form from the state Department of Health and Human Services. Keep an eye out for it in your mail! If you don't receive it by about the 20th day of the month before your recertification is due, please call your caseworker at the Pitt County Department of Social Services. DSS can mail the form to you. If you do not know who your caseworker is, or if you don't have their phone number, please call DSS at 252-902-1352.

    2. If the bold print on the first page of the form says "Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) Notice of Expiration and Recertification Form," then you don't need to have an interview. But you will still need to complete the form and send or take it to the Pitt County Department of Social Services before the 15th day of the month in which your recertification is due. You may also need to attach some extra documents (more on those below).

    3. If the bold print on the first page of the form says "Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) Notice of Expiration and Interview Recertification Form," then you will need to have an interview. The best time for your interview is early in the month when your recertification is due, but definitely no later than the 15th. You will also need to complete the recertification form and attach any extra documents. Then either send them to Pitt County DSS or bring them with you to your interview.

To help make this process run more smoothly, please take a few minutes to complete this online questionnaire. Then at the end, please click the SUBMIT button to send it to the Pitt County Department of Social Services.

To get started, think back about 5 months to the date your benefits began, or the date of your last recertification. Did you have an interview, either at the DSS Human Services Center or on the phone?

  5. If you had an interview a few months ago ...*

If you had an interview about 5 months ago, then you probably won't need to have another one soon. But you will still need to return the recertification form and any extra documents.

Please be sure to return them by the 15th day of the 6th month of your benefit period. For example, if your benefit period began in July, please get the form and any other documents to us by December 15.

Please let us know if you have any questions, or if we can help you in any way.

If you wish, we would be happy to talk with you over the phone, or we can meet with you at the Pitt County DSS Human Services Center located at 203 Government Circle, Greenville, NC 27834. Please let us know what would be most convenient for you.

  6. If you did not have an interview a few months ago ...*

If you didn't have an interview at your last recertification about 5 months ago, you will probably need to have one soon. You will also need to return the recertification form and any extra documents.

If the bold print on the first page of the form says "Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) Notice of Expiration and Interview Recertification Form," you will know that you are due for an interview.

The best time for your interview is between the 1st and the 15th day of of the 6th month of your benefit period. That's 2 -- 4 weeks after you receive the form.

You can choose to do your interview over the phone, or you can schedule an appointment to meet with a DSS staff member at the Human Services Center. Please let us know what would be most convenient for you.

  7. You may or may not need to have an interview.*

But if it says "Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) Notice of Expiration and Recertification Form," then you will not need an interview.

You should receive the form by the middle of the 5th month of your benefit period. If you haven't received it by the 20th day of the 5th month of your benefit period, please call DSS at 252-902-1352. DSS can mail the form to you.

You will need to complete and return the recertification form, along with any extra documents, to the Pitt County DSS Human Services Center located at 203 Government Circle, Greenville, NC 27834. Please mail them to the Human Services Center, or drop them off with a receptionist there as soon as possible.

If you need an interview, the best time is between the 1st and the 15th day of of the 6th month of your benefit period. That's 2 -- 4 weeks after you should receive the form.

You can choose to do your interview over the phone, or you can schedule an appointment to meet with a DSS staff member at the Human Services Center. Appointments are conducted on Monday through Friday between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM. Please let us know what would be most convenient for you.
