Wishing You & Your Family a Happy Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is a time to pause, reflect, and appreciate the good within our lives over the past year. It is a moment to be thankful for family, both the ones we are born into and the ones we choose, as well as for friends, loved ones, and coworkers who support us each day. It also celebrates the strength of community, from friendly neighbors lending a hand to simple kindnesses or sharing a smile in passing. This holiday reminds us to value each moment, even the lessons learned through challenges, helping us grow and stay connected to one another.

Pitt County offices are closed Thursday & Friday in observance of the holiday.

Reflecting on Our Nation’s Tradition

On September 28, 1789, the first Federal Congress asked President George Washington to recommend a national day of thanksgiving. Soon after, Washington proclaimed Thursday, November 26, 1789, marking the first Thanksgiving under the new Constitution. Later presidents continued the tradition, but the date often changed creating confusion. Congress passed a resolution in 1941 in which Lawmakers agreed that Thanksgiving would be held on the fourth Thursday of November each year. President Roosevelt signed it on December 26, 1941, officially setting the date that remains in place today.
