Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a federal holiday observed annually on the third Monday of January to honor the life, legacy, and enduring impact of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., one of the most influential leaders of the American Civil Rights Movement. Dr. King championed the values of nonviolence, justice, equality, opportunity, and dignity for all, inspiring generations through his words, leadership, and unwavering commitment to freedom.

A Legacy of Leadership and Nonviolence
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (January 15, 1929 – April 4, 1968) was a Baptist minister and civil rights leader whose leadership helped transform American society during the 1950s and 1960s. He advocated for nonviolent resistance in the struggle against racial segregation and discrimination and played a central role in historic milestones such as:
- The Montgomery Bus Boycott
- The founding of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference
- The March on Washington and his iconic “I Have a Dream” speech
- Influencing key civil rights legislation including the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965
Dr. King was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 for his nonviolent efforts to advance civil rights. His work and message continue to inspire people across the nation and around the world.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is often described as a “Day On, Not a Day Off,” encouraging community service, volunteerism, education, and civic engagement. Residents and organizations are encouraged to participate in activities that advance unity, equality, and service to the community and others.
