Pitt County Health Department Investigating Case of Tuberculosis
Pitt County and Pitt County Schools announce the Public Health Department is investigating a case of Tuberculosis (TB) involving an individual at D.H. Conley High School located at 2006 Worthington Rd, Greenville, N.C.
According to Pitt County Health Director Wes Gray, the department was notified on Saturday, January 3, 2026 of the case. A letter from the Pitt County Health Director will be sent to all D.H. Conley High School parents/guardians if their student requires testing.
“We are identifying possible exposures and will inform staff and parents/guardians of students who need to be tested. At this time, there is no immediate risk to the public,” says Wes Gray.
Public Health will provide TB testing to students and staff identified as exposed at the school at no cost to the student or school system. The majority of staff and students will not need any testing or treatment. Anyone who has a positive test will be offered medication for treatment at no cost. Post-exposure treatment prevents development of TB.
TB is a respiratory disease that generally develops over weeks to months. TB spreads similar to the cold or flu, but is not as contagious and is completely curable with medication.
While it is important for the community to be aware of the case investigation, no one is at immediate risk of health problems related to this case and there is no further risk of exposure. Regardless of exposure, there is no need to limit activities.
