Pitt County Human Relations Commission to Host Black History Month Event
Pitt County Human Relations Commission (HRC) announces a Black History Month event recognizing the landmark court case resulting in integration of Pitt County public schools at its regular meeting scheduled for Tuesday, February 17, 2026 at 6:00 p.m. in the Eugene James Auditorium of the County Administration Building located at 1717 W 5th Street, Greenville.
The purpose of the event is to recognize, by proclamation, the history of Pitt County public schools’ desegregation. The United States Supreme Court ruled unanimously on May 17, 1954 in Brown v Board of Education (1954) that segregation in American Public Schools on the basis of race violated the Fourteenth Amendment. In 1956, the State of North Carolina enacted the Pearsall Plan, which delegated desegregation related issues to local school districts.
Pitt County public schools remained segregated until 1965, when Teel, et al v Pitt County Board of Education (1965) was heard in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina.
In August 1965, more than 200 African-American students began attending school with white students throughout Pitt County.
“The Commission wishes to recognize the bravery and sacrifice of the families who participated in the integration of Pitt County Schools. The public is invited to attend this Black History Month event,” says Kimberly Moody, Chair, Pitt County Human Relations Commission.
