Operation Green Light
Shining a Light for Our Veterans
Join a nationwide effort to honor and support local veterans November 4–11, 2025. Operation Green Light, a National Association of Counties (NACo) initiative adopted locally, invites our community to recognize veterans by lighting landmarks, buildings, businesses, and homes in green in the days leading up to Veterans Day. The message is simple: shining a green light lets veterans know they are seen, appreciated, and supported.

Understanding the Transition Home
Each year, thousands of service members return to civilian life. While many transition successfully, others face significant challenges.
Some live with physical injuries, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), or other invisible wounds of war that affect their health and daily life. Studies show stress levels often rise in the first year after leaving the military, and the risk of suicide is highest during this transition period. Veterans may also struggle to adapt military skills to civilian jobs, navigate education benefits, or find stable employment. Housing insecurity and homelessness affect veterans at higher rates than the general population, while the shift from military to civilian culture can place strain on relationships and family stability. Operation Green Light raises awareness of these challenges and directs attention to the resources and services available to veterans and their families. Each year, participation grows as more communities join the effort.
Simple Actions to Make an Meaningful Impact
Show your support by lighting your home, business, or facility green. Lights can shine from dusk to dawn, and residents are encouraged to keep them up year-round. Community venues such as libraries, parks, campuses, and faith centers are also encouraged to illuminate entrances or landmarks in green.
- Replace one exterior or interior bulb with a green bulb.
- Illuminate storefronts, signs, or lobbies in green. Many communities also light courthouses, office buildings, landmarks, and bridges.
- Promote the effort through social media and newsletters, and share guides and resources for veterans.
