Resource Conservation Workshop
Growing Conservation Leaders & Inspiring Future Stewards
The Resource Conservation Workshop (RCW) is a weeklong, hands-on learning experience that introduces students who have demonstrated an interest in natural resource conservation to the field of natural resource conservation. Participants study and work directly with professionals across a range of topics such as soil and water conservation, forestry, and wildlife management. The primary goal of the workshop is to help students understand how natural resources are managed in today’s global environment. Awards and scholarships are presented to top participants through several statewide programs.
- Gain real-world skills in soil and water conservation, forestry, and wildlife management.
- Experience life on a college campus while exploring conservation careers.
- Build teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving skills that benefit both school and community life.
- Learn technical guidance to install proven best management practices (BMPs).
- Explore Improving wildlife habitat, manage nutrients, and address drainage or erosion concerns.

Joining the Next Generation of Conservation Leaders
The Pitt County Soil & Water Conservation District provides sponsorship for event registration and some meals not covered under registration. One student will be selected based on the following criteria:
- Any Pitt County rising sophomore, junior, or senior (current seniors are not eligible) showing interest in natural resource conservation.
- Completes and returns the application form by the stated deadline.
- Participates in an interview with the Pitt County Soil & Water Conservation District to determine eligibility, interest, and availability to attend.
- Students may participate only one time in this workshop.
- Student slots will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis, as registrations with specific student's names are received.
Awards & Recognition of Excellence
The Resource Conservation Workshop (RCW) celebrates students who show exceptional dedication, curiosity, and leadership in conservation. Participants who excel during the week have the opportunity to earn scholarships and awards at both the district and state levels. These honors recognize students who demonstrate a strong understanding of natural resource management, teamwork, and a commitment to protecting the environment. Awards are based on classroom participation, fieldwork performance, test scores, and positive engagement throughout the workshop.
Scholarship & Award Opportunities
- Conservation District Employees Association Award: $1,000 college scholarship.
- Billy and Regina Kilpatrick Scholarship: $1,000 college scholarship
- S. Grady Lane Award: $100 cash and a $500 college scholarship
- RCW Performance Awards: Five additional awards presented based on final exam performance.
