Mutt Strutters & Afternoon Walking Programs
Make a Difference One Walk at a Time
Pitt County Animal Services offers two rewarding ways for volunteers to help shelter dogs stay healthy, active, and socialized — Mutt Strutters and the Afternoon Dog Walking Program. Whether you prefer mornings or afternoons, there is a way to get involved and make a difference.
Walk, Connect, and Support Shelter Dogs
Both walking programs offer meaningful ways to support adoptable pets while enjoying time outdoors. Whether you are looking for a way to give back, stay active, or spend time with dogs, these programs provide a simple way to make a difference.
Walk with us and help shelter dogs take steps toward finding a forever home.
Mutt Strutters
Lace up, leash up, and walk a shelter dog! Mutt Strutters gives volunteers the chance to walk dogs through outdoor spaces like Alice F. Keene Park and the Farmer’s Market. These walks provide important exercise and mental stimulation for shelter dogs and give volunteers a fun way to stay active and connect with other animal lovers.
Volunteers meet at the Animal Shelter daily, Monday through Saturday at 9:00 a.m., and Sundays at 9:30 a.m. First-time participants must complete an orientation and walk with an experienced Mutt Strutter. Leashes, harnesses, and waste bags are provided. Treat donations are always welcome.
Afternoon Dog Walking Program
Ideal for those available later in the day, the Afternoon Dog Walking Program helps keep dogs active beyond the morning hours. Volunteers walk dogs from the shelter to nearby Alice F. Keene Park using a scenic route through trails and the Farmer’s Market area.
To support a positive experience, volunteers are encouraged to check harnesses, begin walks calmly, watch for distractions, and use positive reinforcement. Staying hydrated, practicing basic commands, and sharing feedback with staff about each dog’s needs are also important parts of the program.
Walking Routes and Park Access
With direct access to Alice F. Keene Park, this program offers a calm and scenic setting where dogs can stretch their legs and enjoy time outside the kennel.
- Select a walking partner and cross the parking lot.
- Follow the dirt trail between the Recycling Center and Spay Today.
- Continue along the trail to the Farmer’s Market parking lot.
- Walk through the parking lot and use the crosswalk to enter Alice F. Keene Park.
Enjoy your walk, and thank you for helping give shelter dogs a better day.
