Animal Traps

Need Help With a Nuisance Animal?

Pitt County Animal Services (PCAS) provides humane live traps to help capture nuisance dogs and cats. These traps are made available to residents when there is a need to safely catch domestic animals causing a disturbance.

Use of PCAS Traps

If a Pitt County Animal Control Officer (ACO) places a trap for a nuisance dog or cat, PCAS will remove the domestic animal once it is caught. Please note:

  • PCAS does not provide food for traps.
  • Wildlife that is caught and is not injured or sick must be released at the same location as required by North Carolina state law.
  • Traps provided by PCAS are only used for wildlife that is injured, diseased, or a threat to public safety.

Private Traps and Wildlife

If you use your own trap to catch a nuisance dog or cat on your property, please use caution. PCAS may not have available shelter space on the day the animal is caught.

Wildlife caught in private traps will not be removed by PCAS. In those cases, you must contact a licensed private Wildlife Damage Control Agent or a professional trapper.

For more information about wildlife control, licensing, and trapping seasons, visit the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission.

Borrowing a Trap from PCAS

Citizens may borrow a trap from Pitt County Animal Services for up to seven days. Traps are available on a first-come, first-served basis. During peak times, a waiting list may apply.

To request a trap, please call (252) 902-1726, Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
