WIC Nutrition for a Healthy Beginning
The Health Department supports comprehensive nutrition through the WIC program and outreach initiatives. These services help pregnant and postpartum individuals, and children up to age 5 access healthy foods, nutrition education and support for lifelong well‑being.
Who Qualifies
- Pregnant, postpartum (up to 6 months), or breastfeeding individuals (up to 1 year postpartum); infants or children up to age 5.
- Resident of North Carolina.
- Family income at or below 185% of the U.S. Poverty Income Guidelines or receiving services such as Medicaid or SNAP.
- Identified nutritional risk as determined by a WIC nutritionist.

- Supplemental Nutritious Foods: Monthly food packages, including cash‑value vouchers for fruits and vegetables.
- Breastfeeding Support: Peer counseling, educational materials, access to loaner breast pumps, and enhanced food packages for exclusively breastfeeding mothers.

- Community Referrals: Referrals to immunizations, healthcare providers, and social services as needed.
How to Apply for WIC Benefits
- By Appointment: To schedule your first WIC visit Call 252‑902‑2393
- Referral Form: You can also complete the NC WIC Referral Form and expect contact within 10–20 days.
- What to Bring:
- Identification: Driver’s license, birth certificate, Social Security card, Medicaid card, military ID, immunization record, or infant crib card/ID bracelet.
- Proof of Residency: Utility bill, bank or Medicaid statement, rental/mortgage receipt, or NC DMV ID.
- Proof of Income: Pay stubs, tax return, Medicaid/SNAP documentation, employer letter, or unemployment notice. (If on Medicaid, TANF or SNAP, you may skip additional income proof.)
