Eviction Prevention Assistance

Rent Due

Behind on Your Rent?

Get information and find help before eviction moves forward. Many households face financial challenges, and rent can become hard to pay. Falling behind may lead to eviction, but taking early action can help reduce that risk. Help may be available through the Pitt County Department of Social Services (DSS) and other programs. DSS may provide up to unpaid rent assistance to eligible applicants and offers guidance on housing resources and working with landlords.

The first step is to make a plan. Eviction may be prevented when tenants understand their options, talk with landlords or property managers, and seek available assistance.

  2. Additional Support Options

To Qualify for Emergency Rent Assistance

All of the following requirements must be met:

  1. Eviction court documents are required.
Applicants must have official court paperwork, such as a Complaint in Summary Ejectment or Magistrate Summons. Notices from landlords alone do not qualify.
  2. A child lives in the household.
At least one related child under age 18 must live in the home at least 50% of the time.
  3. The landlord agrees to stop eviction.
The landlord must be willing to allow the tenant to remain if payment is made. This will be confirmed before assistance is approved.
  4. The tenant can pay remaining costs.
Up to $600 in unpaid rent may be covered. Any remaining rent or fees must be paid by the tenant.
  5. Household income meets guidelines.
Income from the past 30 days must be below 200% of federal poverty guidelines, and the household must show the ability to pay rent going forward.
