Be a Holiday Hero & Brighten the Season for Someone in Care
During the holiday seasons of Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s, the Pitt County Department of Social Services works with community partners to collect and organize donations. These efforts help children, older adults, and individuals with disabilities in our care receive basic living essentials and comfort items during this special time of year. Support is coordinated through the programs below.
Bring Holiday Cheer to Children in Foster Care
“The annual toy drive reflects the spirit of compassion and generosity that defines our community. Each donation directly impacts the lives of children in foster care by providing comfort and joy during the holiday season. We are grateful for the continued support of residents, businesses and community partners who make this effort possible.”
Janis Gallagher, Pitt County Manager.

Help Support Adults in Care This Holiday Season
“Vulnerable individuals experience holidays differently. A seemingly small, insignificant thing can mean the world to them at Christmas or any special time of the year,”
Sharon Rochelle, Social Services Director.
Help bring holiday cheer to older adults and individuals with disabilities who live in adult care homes, as well as adults under guardianship of the agency. Many of these residents have limited or no family support, and even small gestures can make the season brighter.
The Adult Foster Holiday Project is an annual program that relies entirely on donations and sponsorships from residents, businesses, faith communities, and civic groups. Financial contributions, hygiene items, clothing, and sponsorship.
Each year, “needs lists” are created for more than 200 individuals. These lists include essential items such as clothing, personal care supplies, and hygiene products. Groups and individuals may adopt a full list or donate individual items to support adults in care.
Suggested donations include:
- Socks, T-shirts, and underwear
- Seasonally appropriate clothing
- Personal care and hygiene items
- Monetary donations
- Volunteering time to help shop for listed items
Please make checks or money orders payable to Pitt County Department of Social Services with the memo line “Adult Foster Holiday Project.”
