Your Health Is Our Purpose
Did you know Americans live an average of 35 years longer today than when the American Public Health Association was founded over 150 years ago? This progress is thanks to public health efforts that have improved well-being across communities nationwide and around the world.
Public health supports everyone. It affects how we live, work, and play. It’s an invisible force that helps keep us safe and healthy.
Recent public health efforts have helped eliminate diseases in some regions, expand vaccination programs, and secure funding for key services like reproductive care, behavioral health and climate resilience.
Learn How Public Health Improves Everyday Life
Public Health Starts With You
Support Mental Health:
Volunteer with local mental health organizations. Attend events such as awareness walks or fundraisers. If you or someone you know needs help, call the SAMHSA National Helpline at 1-800-662-HELP or connect with a trained counselor.
Get to Know Your Neighbors:
Social connections support healthy aging. Help your community by offering assistance to neighbors, such as running errands or sharing extra garden produce.
The American Public Health Association brings together partners, advocates for change and shares best practices to build capacity in the public health community.
Community and Neighborhood
Make Healthy Food Accessible:
Support or host farmers markets, mobile markets, or community-supported agriculture (CSA) programs in underserved areas. These efforts help make fresh, affordable food available to everyone while supporting local farmers.
Build Parks and Gathering Spaces:
Parks and green spaces give people of all ages and abilities a safe place to connect, stay active, and support their physical and mental health. Accessible parks help strengthen both individuals and the community.
City and State
Prepare for Emergencies:
Cities and states can help residents get ready for disasters, disease outbreaks, and other crises. This includes offering education, resources, and training to help families stay safe during emergencies.

Expand Reproductive Health Access:
Funding clinics that provide family planning, STI testing, counseling, and safe, legal abortion services helps ensure everyone can get the care they need.
Nationwide Efforts Strengthen Public Health Systems
Everyone has a role in building a fair and sustainable public health system. Working with nontraditional partners helps create a stronger system for all. Invest in the Workforce: training and supporting public health professionals ensures they are prepared to meet today’s challenges and those to come.
