Migrant Housing Inspections

Supporting Healthy Seasonal Housing for Agricultural Workers

Pitt County is home to several migrant housing sites that provide seasonal housing for agricultural workers who support the local farming community. Maintaining healthy and functional living spaces is a shared effort among local and state partners.

The Environmental Health team conducts annual inspections of drinking water wells and septic systems only at each site before workers arrive for the season. These inspections help confirm systems are working properly and that drinking water meets required health standards. These inspections helps reduce health risks for workers and the surrounding community while supporting reliable access to safe drinking water.

County and State Roles

As part of routine inspections, water samples are collected and tested through a certified laboratory.

If issues are found during County inspections, property owners must complete repairs within a required timeframe. Follow-up inspections are then completed to confirm the issues have been corrected.

Most migrant housing units serve four to six workers, with no more than two people per bedroom, as required by state standards. While schedules may vary, inspections are typically completed well before the agricultural season to help ensure housing is ready when workers arrive.
