Promoting Mental Health Awareness and Encouraging Open Conversations
Pitt County is Partnering with East Carolina University, The City of Greenville, Pitt County Schools, Pitt Community College, Greenville-Pitt Chamber of Commerce , and a variety of leading employers including Hyster-Yale Material Handling, Orthopedics East, and Attindas to promote mental health awareness and encourage open conversations on R U OK? Day on March 26th.
Despite being more connected than ever through social media and online "friends," people still feel lonely. It's important to focus on building relationships and taking care of our friends, family, and colleagues. One in five adults in the United States experience mental illness each year and the overall suicide rate has increased by 31% since 2001.
Mental health is a critical part of overall well-being, influencing personal relationships, workplace productivity, and community health. R U OK? Day fosters a culture of care by encouraging people to check in on one another and R U OK? Day about mental health. A simple question—"Are you okay?"—can make a profound difference in someone’s life.
“We are excited to bring the community together for R U OK? Day to spark conversations and support mental health awareness. This event is a meaningful way to check in on one another and make a real difference for a good cause,” said Isabella Jimenez-Vargas, a student in ECU’s Immersive MBA program.
