Pitt County, ECU Libraries “The Gathering Voices Project” Begins
Pitt County was awarded a $10,000 America 250 NC County Committees grant. The grant was created by the North Carolina General Assembly as part of SL 2023-134 and is administered by the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.
The County’s grant initiative, “The Gathering Voices Project” is in partnership with Pitt County’s Human Relations Commission and East Carolina University Academic Library Services. It aims to highlight and celebrate the diverse communities of Pitt County, foster learning, strengthen community engagement and provide individuals with a platform to use their voices. The project will also address the need for local perspectives in K-12 Social Studies curriculums, focusing on primary source instruction and help students explore themes related to America 250.
“‘The Gathering Voices Project’ will bring people together within Pitt County to discuss the challenges and opportunities they face in their everyday life in regards to human relations in the form of listening sessions. These sessions will focus on hearing from the residents of each community, providing a space for expression and to share stories of Pitt County’s rich history and its contributions to North Carolina history,” says Janis Gallagher, County Manager.
“The public is invited to attend these listening sessions. Allowing residents to use their voice will strengthen, inspire and encourage future generations to use their voices,” says Florida Hardy, Assistant County Manager.
“The Gathering Voices Project” aims to bring together different community leaders and provide helpful information. These sessions aim to raise awareness about important issues and develop support for taking action. The goal is to further advocacy efforts, promote new attitudes and policies and bring the community together to share experiences with each other in a supportive, recovery affirming environment.
