Help Us Welcome Deputy Barkley and K9 Chilli
Pitt County Sheriff’s Office proudly welcomes two exceptional canines— Deputy Barkley and K9 Chilli—who are each making a unique impact in our community through safety, service, and support.
Deputy Barkley is a 1.5-year-old golden retriever who serves as a certified Police Service Therapy K9. Originally from West Virginia, Barkley now calls Pitt County home. He graduated in March 2025 from East Coast Canines training in Rocky Mount and was certified through the U.S. Police Canine Association.
Deputy Barkley works alongside Deputy Chris Curtis, helping crime victims and witnesses during court proceedings, supporting first responders, and spreading comfort in schools, nursing homes, and community events. Barkley is also available for visits to groups by request—just contact Deputy Curtis at chris.curtis@pittcountync.gov or call (252) 902-2735.
K9 Chilli is a four-year-old Belgian Malinois who recently joined the Pitt County Sheriff’s Office. She is an Explosive Detection K9 partnered with Detective Foster. Chilli was donated through a Federal Explosive Detection K9 Program and is currently completing training with East Coast Canine. Together with Detective Foster, she will soon be deployed into active service to help protect Pitt County and reduce risk in critical situations.
Whether detecting danger or providing comfort, K9 Chilli and Deputy Barkley are making a meaningful difference in Pitt County every day. Help us welcome these dedicated canines to our Sheriff's Office family!
