Shining a Light on the Challenges of Poverty
The Pitt County Board of Commissioners joined communities across the nation in recognizing National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week during their Monday, November 17 meeting. This annual observance, coordinated by the National Coalition for the Homeless and the National Student Campaign Against Hunger and Homelessness, shines a light on the challenges of poverty while highlighting ongoing local efforts to ensure access to food and stable housing
“Our community’s true strength is reflected in how we support our neighbors in need,” said Janis Gallagher, County Manager. “By raising awareness and working together with empathy and purpose, we can build a stronger Pitt County, one where every resident has a safe home and a meal to count on.”
To support this year’s observance, Pitt County will host a digital awareness campaign from November 16–22, 2025, sharing data, success stories, and available resources to help residents better understand and engage with homelessness and hunger issues. Information will be available on the County’s website at www.PittCountyNC.gov/Homelessness and on Facebook at @PittCountyNC.
According to the N.C. Housing Coalition, the need for affordable housing remains significant in Pitt County:
- 32% (22,552 households) are considered cost-burdened.
- 48% (15,663 renter households) struggle to afford rent.
- $22.21/hour is now required to afford a Fair Market Rent apartment, a 49% increase over five years.
- 19% (6,889 homeowners) experience difficulty maintaining housing costs.
“Pitt County and its partners provide essential support to individuals experiencing homelessness,” said Lynne James, Homeless Program Coordinator. “This includes distributing food, water, backpacks, personal care items, and gift cards, as well as connecting individuals to the Salvation Army and JOY Soup Kitchen for meals.”
Pitt County continues to advance food security through initiatives such as the Making Pitt Fit Community Garden, the administration of Food & Nutrition (SNAP/WIC) benefits through the Department of Social Services. DSS is awaiting further communication from NCDHHS regarding the issuance of full November SNAP benefits. Double check this before releasing.
