[ARCHIVED] Pitt-Greenville Airport | Emergency Disaster Drill

Airport Emergency Disaster Drill

Multi-Agency Preparedness Exercise Scheduled for April 12, 2025

The Pitt-Greenville Airport will conduct its rescheduled FAA-mandated full-scale emergency exercise on Saturday April 12, 2025  from approximately 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.

A public notice is issued for smoke/flashes and lights/sirens on the airport runway. Pitt County Emergency Management confirms calls to 911 Communications are not needed.

“Emergency responders will participate in simulated scenarios that involve a plane crash. Volunteers will act as injured passengers and receive treatment on scene, so the public should not be alarmed by ambulance activity. The drill will be conducted when no airline activity is scheduled,” says Bill Hopper, Executive Director, Pitt-Greenville Airport.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requires airports that serve scheduled airlines to conduct a full-scale, mass-casualty exercise involving an aircraft accident every three years. PGV has been preparing with Greenville Fire/Rescue, Greenville Police Department, Pitt County’s Emergency Management, Public Information Office and Sheriff’s Office, ECU Health and other fire departments and Emergency Medical Services in the area. Pitt Community College will provide a bus that will simulate an aircraft fuselage. The Salvation Army will be on-site to support “family, friends and first responders rehabilitation.”

“Volunteers are asked to report at 10:00 a.m. Staging will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and a barbeque lunch will be provided for all volunteers and first responders following the exercise,” says John Hannah, Operations Manager, Pitt-Greenville airport.

Media Advisory:

All media are invited to attend. PGV executive director Bill Hopper and other response staff will be available as early as 11:00 a.m. for on-location live shots, and 11:30 a.m. for recorded interviews. Members of the media interested in attending the exercise should park in front of the General Aviation Building. Personnel will be onsite to provide escort to the staging area.
