[ARCHIVED] Public Health | Turberculosis Case Investigation

Pitt County Health Department Investigating Case of Tuberculosis

Pitt County and Pitt County Schools announce the Public Health Department is investigating a case of Tuberculosis (TB) involving an individual at Farmville Middle School located at 3914 Grimmersburg Street, Farmville, N.C.

According to Pitt County Health Director Wes Gray, the department was notified on Monday, December 8, 2025 of the case.  A joint letter from the Pitt County Health Director and Pitt County Schools leadership has been sent to all Farmville Middle School parents/guardians informing of the case investigation.

“Though there is no immediate public health risk from this exposure, we are investigating the possible exposures and will inform staff and parents/guardians of students who need to be tested to ensure that any potential exposure to TB is identified,” says Wes Gray.

Public Health, School Nurses and Pitt County Schools staff are working together to identify possible exposures.  Public Health will provide TB testing to students identified as exposed at the school at no cost to the student or school system. The majority of staff and students will not need any testing or treatment. Anyone who has a positive test will be offered medication for treatment at no cost. Post-exposure treatment prevents development of TB.

TB is a respiratory disease that generally develops over weeks to months. TB spreads similar to the cold or flu, but is not as contagious and is completely curable with medication.

While it is important for the community to be aware of the case investigation, no one is at immediate risk of health problems related to this case and there is no further risk of exposure.  Regardless of exposure, there is no need to limit activities.
