What to Know Before Saying "I Do"
Getting married is an exciting and happy milestone. Before you walk down the aisle, it helps to understand North Carolina’s legal requirements. From applying for a license to knowing who can officiate, a few steps must be completed ahead of time so you can focus on celebrating your day with confidence.
State law requires couples to obtain a marriage license no more than 60 days before the ceremony. Missing this step can delay or prevent the marriage from being legally recognized. After the ceremony, the marriage certificate serves as the official legal record of your union and may be needed for personal, financial, or legal purposes.
Marriage License Application Checklist
- The ceremony must take place in North Carolina within 60 days of receiving the license.
- Both applicants must appear in person to receive the license.
- Provide a valid government-issued photo ID (e.g., driver’s license or passport).
- Bring proof of your Social Security number.
- Complete the online application beforehand to save time.
- Bring $60 for the marriage license fee.
You can apply for your marriage license online or in person. Be prepared to provide details for both applicants, including full legal names, birth names of both parents and current addresses.
Need a Copy of Your Marriage Certificate?
A certified copy of your marriage certificate may be needed for many reasons. It’s often required to legally change your last name on IDs, bank accounts and employment records. It may also be needed to update Social Security and tax information, apply for insurance coverage or complete immigration paperwork. Couples may use it to open joint accounts, apply for loans or enroll in spousal benefits. Additionally, it’s useful for estate planning, confirming marital status in legal matters and keeping personal records up to date. During a divorce or legal separation, the certificate serves as official proof of marriage.
