Identity Theft Protection Act
Protect Your Personal Information on Public Records
Pitt County is committed to protecting the personal information of its residents. Under the North Carolina Identity Theft Protection Act of 2005, individuals have the right to request the removal, also called “redaction”, of certain sensitive numbers from public records available online.
This law helps reduce the risk of identity theft by allowing residents to have private information removed from public-facing documents maintained by the Pitt County Register of Deeds and the Clerk of Superior Court.
What Can Be Removed (Redacted)?
You may request redaction of the following personal identifiers if they appear in publicly available documents:
- Social Security numbers
- Employer taxpayer identification numbers
- Driver’s license or state-issued ID numbers
- Passport numbers
- Bank account (checking or savings) numbers
- Credit and debit card numbers
- Personal Identification Numbers (PINs)
- Passwords
How to Request a Redaction
To request removal of any of the items above from public online records, follow these steps:
- Submit a written request to the Pitt County Register of Deeds or Clerk of Superior Court.
- Clearly sign the request.
- Deliver it by mail, fax, email, or in person.
Important Notes
- There is no fee to make a redaction request.
- Only information currently available online is eligible for redaction under this law.
- Filing a false redaction request is considered an infraction and may result in a fine.
