Requesting Military Discharge (DD-214) Records

The Pitt County Register of Deeds Office provides certified copies of military discharge documents (commonly referred to as DD-214 forms) for veterans who have recorded their documents in Pitt County. These records are available to qualified individuals in accordance with North Carolina General Statutes.

Who Can Request a DD-214?

Access to military discharge records is restricted to protect the privacy of veterans. Only the following individuals may request a copy:

  • The veteran named in the record
  • The veteran’s spouse, child, sibling, or parent
  • Authorized agents or legal representatives of the veteran
  • Authorized government representatives (for official purposes)

How To Request a Copy

You will be required to complete the required form and present valid government-issued photo identification.

Recording a Military Discharge Document

Veterans are encouraged to record their discharge papers (DD-214) with the Register of Deeds Office for safekeeping and to make future requests easier. There is no fee for recording this document, and doing so ensures quick access when needed for benefits, employment, or verification purposes.

Simply bring your original DD-214 and a valid photo ID to our office during business hours. The document will be recorded and returned to you immediately.
