Take Your Notary Oath & Get Certified in Pitt County
New Notary Public Commissions
If you have received your commission from the North Carolina Secretary of State, you must take your oath of office in person at the Register of Deeds Office in the county where you live. This step must be completed within 45 days of the issue date on your commission notice.
To take your oath, please bring:
- Your official Notary Oath Notification Letter from the NC Secretary of State
- A valid, government-issued photo ID (such as a driver’s license or passport)
- A $10.00 filing fee (payable by cash, check, or card)
Once the oath is administered, you will receive your Notary Certificate, allowing you to begin performing notarial acts across North Carolina.
Notary Certificate Copies
Certified copies of your Notary Public certificate are available for a fee of $5.00 per certified copy. These may be required by employers, financial institutions, or government agencies for verification.
Notary Name or Address Changes
If your name or address has changed, you must update this information with the NC Secretary of State and file the appropriate forms with our office. Name changes may require a new oath of office and a revised certificate.

- What happens if I miss the 45-day deadline?
If you do not take your oath within 45 days of your commission being issued, your notary commission will be canceled and you will need to reapply through the Secretary of State. - Can someone else take the oath for me?
No. The notary must appear in person to take the oath. This cannot be delegated. - Do I have to live in Pitt County?
Yes. You must reside in Pitt County to take your oath here. If you live in another county, you must visit the Register of Deeds in that county. - Do I need to schedule an appointment?
Appointments are not required, but we encourage you to come early to avoid delays during peak times.
