Pitt County offers a range of programs designed to support families from pregnancy through early childhood. These programs connect you with specially trained medical and clinical professionals who provide personalized care, education, and guidance in the comfort of your home.

The Pitt County Health Department offers free childbirth education classes for expectant parents who live in Pitt County and receive Medicaid or WIC maternity care services. These classes help prepare you and your support person for a safe and confident birth experience.
What You’ll Learn
- Pregnancy changes and warning signs
- Labor stages, positions, and comfort techniques
- Medications and medical interventions
- Creating a birth plan
- Postpartum care and recovery
- Tour of ECU Health’s Labor and Delivery unit
Program Details
- Offered during the second half of pregnancy
- Includes up to 10 hours of instruction
- Meets NC Medicaid education standards
Expecting individuals can receive comprehensive prenatal care and support through our Prenatal Clinic. Services support a healthy pregnancy, safe delivery, and positive outcomes for both mother and baby. Care is provided by experienced nurses, physicians, and health educators, with a focus on personalized, compassionate care.
Additional services include:
- Regular prenatal checkups and monitoring
- Childbirth education and preparation
- Referrals and connections to WIC, Pregnancy Care Management, and other community resources
Caring Programs to Support Your Pregnancy Journey
Whether you are preparing for your first baby, navigating a high-risk pregnancy, or caring for a newborn, a variety of evidence-based programs are available to support women, infants, and families during pregnancy and the early years of a child’s life. These programs may include home visits, education, and personalized resources to help build a strong, healthy foundation.
Programs Include but Are Not Limited To:
- NC Baby Love Plus & Healthy Start: Outreach and support services designed to reduce infant mortality and improve maternal and child health outcomes.
- Nurse-Family Partnership & Home Visiting: Nurse visits that provide health assessments, safe sleep education, breastfeeding support, and referrals to community resources.
Overall Goals of These Programs:
- Improve pregnancy outcomes through prenatal care, nutrition guidance, and healthy lifestyle support.
- Promote child health and development by helping parents provide safe, nurturing, and responsive care.
- Support economic self-sufficiency by connecting families with education, goal-setting, and employment resources.
- Advance maternal and infant safety through education on safe sleep, postpartum health, and pregnancy wellness.
