Take Care of Your Mind This May

May is National Mental Health Awareness Month—a time to prioritize your emotional well-being and break the stigma around mental health. Most people agree that mental health is important, yet many still hesitate to seek support when they need it.

Did You Know? While over 90% of Americans believe mental health is just as important as physical health, only about 46% of people experiencing mental health challenges actually receive help, according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI).

Getting help is a sign of strength—not weakness. Seeking support can lead to better outcomes, healthier relationships, and improved quality of life. Let’s work together to create a culture where asking for help is encouraged and supported.

This Mental Health Awareness Month, let’s break the stigma and build a stronger, more supportive Pitt County—one conversation at a time.

5 Ways to Support Your Mental Health

  • Stay Connected:
Meaningful connections improve both mental and physical health. Reach out to a friend, smile at a stranger, or meet someone for coffee—small gestures make a big impact.
  • Build a Routine:
A consistent routine helps reduce stress and brings structure to your day. Whether it’s a morning walk, meal prepping, or setting aside time for chores, routines create calm. Miss a day? Just pick it back up tomorrow.
  • Move Your Body & Eat Well:
Physical activity and a balanced diet rich in whole foods can boost your mood and energy. Even light movement makes a difference.
  • Find Purpose:
Having a sense of purpose strengthens emotional health. It can come from your work, volunteering, caring for others, practicing gratitude, or exploring your beliefs.
  • Ask for Help:
If you're feeling overwhelmed, talk with a mental health professional. Many workplaces, including Pitt County Government, offer Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) to support personal and emotional challenges.
