Essential Ordinance Requirements for Waste Management
Protect public health and the environment by managing waste responsibly and avoiding violations or costly penalties.
Household Garbage Storage & Weekly Removal
The county does not provide curbside trash pickup, though most municipalities do. Contact your local Public Works department for details about service in your area. Residents not covered by a municipal program may use the county’s solid waste and recycling collection sites or the central Transfer Station for residential household waste.
All household garbage must be removed from your property at least once every seven days to maintain health and safety standards.
When stored outside between drop-offs, garbage must be kept in a durable, rust-resistant, watertight container with secure handles and a tight, fly-proof lid. Loose bags, open containers, or truck beds do not meet requirements.
Bulk & Appliance Waste
Bulky items such as furniture or large debris must not remain outside for more than 72 hours. Plan ahead for proper disposal to keep your property safe and clean. Appliances left outdoors with doors attached pose a serious risk to children and are a violation. Always remove doors before placing appliances outside for disposal.
Illegal Dumping
Dumping or discarding waste in unapproved areas is unlawful. This includes both intentional dumping and accidental littering. Dispose of all waste only at designated facilities to help protect the environment.
Yard Waste Management
Yard waste must be stored so it does not attract rodents or create a fire hazard. Piles set aside for burning are not considered proper storage. Yard waste is accepted at all 14 collection sites and at the Transfer Station.
