Medicaid

healthcare

NC Medicaid for low-income individuals and families helps cover medical services for parents, children, seniors, and people with disabilities. There are different types of Medicaid coverage available, based on a person’s age, income, and health needs. For those who qualify, NC Medicaid covers most health services including doctor visits, check-ups, emergency care, dental care, vision and hearing services, prescription drugs, maternity and postpartum care, hospital services, behavioral health, preventive and wellness services, medical-related devices and more. Copays are little or no-cost. and there are no monthly premiums. The highest copay is $4 and that is only needed for some services.

Expanded Medicaid Coverage

Many residents may now qualify for health care coverage, even if they were not eligible in the past. To receive NC Medicaid, a person generally must meet the following requirements:

  • Be a U.S. citizen or have an eligible immigration status
  • Live in North Carolina
  • Have a Social Security number, or show that you have applied for one if eligible

Parents and caregivers can apply for children even if the adult is not eligible for coverage.

If someone in the household is pregnant, they may qualify for other Medicaid programs that provide full health benefits. People with certain health needs may also qualify for specialized Medicaid coverage. Examples include, but are not limited to, physical or cognitive disabilities, traumatic brain injury, or breast or cervical cancer.

Check eligibility for each person in your household. Even if one person does not qualify, others in the family may still be eligible.
