Tracking Pitt County’s Progress Toward a Healthier Future
The Health Department shares important information to help residents, local groups and leaders understand the health of our community. These reports address health concerns and guide actions to improve health and quality of life.
Understanding Our Community’s Health
The Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) uses surveys, focus groups, and public health data to identify the most important health issues affecting local residents. This effort is part of a regional partnership through Health ENC, which connects counties across eastern North Carolina to share information and create coordinated health plans. Both hospitals and health departments are required to complete these reports, which guide planning, improve programs, and help reduce health differences in the community.
Health priorities are chosen through a collaborative process with community members, local experts, and partner organizations. These priorities guide public health actions each year. The Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP) is created from the priorities identified in the CHNA. Each year after the CHNA, the State of the County Health Report highlights progress made on the CHIP. All reports are available on the scorecard.

Accessing Birth and Death Certificates
The Health Director serves as the local registrar for all births and deaths that occur in Pitt County. Each year, about 3,000 birth certificates and 1,500 death certificates are processed locally.
Vital records such as birth and death certificates are collected and stored by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) through the State Center for Health Statistics (SCHS).
